THE OPERATION

Acid

This is commonly used in this type of procedure to kill the cells that make up the nail bed.  So it looks like the nail will not grow back.  There are a couple of ways they could have prevented the nail growing back, one with a laser to burn away the bed, root and matrix of the nail, another by cutting out all the required bits and finally the Phenol to burn away the bed.   Sometimes stitches are needed but then I found some pictures of other peoples toe where both corners of the nail had become ingrown and they looked nasty.
I have done a little research and found out exactly what was entails in the surgical removal of my infected ingrown toe nail, it's amazing what you can find on the Internet.  Firstly the stuff they applied is called Phenol and it like a very strong alcohol that can cause serious burns.   ingrown[1].gif (10154 bytes)nailremover[1].gif (5651 bytes)

21-1-99 Here is the Après-Bath photo, nice and soft and gooey.  At this point there is no pain at all and once I had toweled it off I was able to walk around with out a limp or any pain for the first time in months.  I do not have to report to the nurse any more so I just put a dry dressing on of a night so it does not catch in bed.  I found after a couple of days I could wear light deck shoes or trainers with a light dressing and feel little or no discomfort so it looks like I will be back at work pretty soon.
